Elizabeth Hadaway [Elizabeth Leigh Palmer] (Alum, 1983-1986)
Elizabeth Hadaway attended the Workshop in poetry and fiction from 1983-86 and was the Writer-in-Residence in 1996. A Stegner fellow whose book, Fire Baton won the 10th Annual Library of Virginia Literary Award for poetry, she is now an Episcopal priest in western New York state. Read more about Elizabeth.

Valley Haggard (Alum, 1990-1991)
Valley Haggard attended YWW in 1990 and 1991, and returned as a counselor in 1994 and 1995. She is the founder and co-director of Richmond Young Writers. Read more about Valley.

Tim Harrod (Alum, 1984-1986)
Tim Harrod attended the Workshop in journalism (1984), scriptwriting (1985) and playwriting (1986). He has written for Late Night With Conan O’Brien, where the team he worked on was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Variety Series. He currently writes for The Onion and humor magazine, The American Bystander. Read more about Tim.

Arna Bontemps Hemenway (Alum, 2004)
Arna Bontemps Hemenway attended the Workshop in fiction in 2004. He is the author of Elegy on Kinderklavier (Sarabande Books), winner of the 2015 PEN/Hemingway Award, finalist for the Barnes and Noble Discover Award, and long-listed for the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Prize. Jody Hobbs Hesler (Alum, 1985)
Jody Hobbs Hesler attended the Workshop in fiction in 1985. She writes and teaches fiction in Charlottesville, VA. Read more about Jody.

Chris Higgins (Alum, 1995-1996)
Chris Higgins attended the Workshop in playwriting in 1995 and songwriting in 1996. A creative arts jack-of-all-trades, he is/has been a filmmaker, podcast host, essayist, and blogger and is the author of the book The Blogger Abides. Read more about Chris.

Lauren Hilger (Alum, 2002)
Lauren Hilger attended the Workshop in poetry in 2002 and joined the residential staff as a teacher and counselor in 2010. She is the author of the poetry collection Lady Be Good and poetry editor for No Tokens literary journal. Read more about Lauren.

Jeff Hirsch (Alum, 1986 & 1988)
Jeff Hirsch attended the Workshop in fiction in 1986 and poetry in 1988. He is the author of eight novels, including the USA Today best-selling The Eleventh Plague and Magisterium. Read more about Jeff.

Henry Hoke (Alum, 2000-2001; Teaching Scriptwriter, 2008-2021)
Henry Hoke attended the Workshop in playwriting in 2000 and 2001, joined the residential staff as a teacher and counselor in 2005 and 2006, and returned as a teaching screenwriter from 2008-2021. Jodie Hollander (Alum, 1992-1993)
Jodie Hollander attended the Workshop in poetry from 1992-93 and has authored the poetry collections The Humane Society and My Dark Horses. Read more about Jodie.

Anushay Hossain (Alum, 1997)


Anushay Hossain attended the Workshop in creative nonfiction in 1997 and joined the residential staff as a teacher and counselor in 1999. She is a journalist and political analyst who has appeared on CNN and MSNBC, among other outlets, and she hosts the Spilling Chai podcast. Read more about Anushay.

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Alum, 1998 & 2000-2001)
Branden Jacobs-Jenkins attended the Workshop in both fiction and playwriting from 1998 and 2000-2001. He is a playwright whose play Gloria was was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2016; in the same year he was also awarded a MacArthur “Genius” Grant. Waldo Jaquith (Alum, 1995)

Jenny Johnson (Alum, 1996; Program Administration, 2003-2009)
Jenny Johnson attended the Workshop in poetry in 1996, joined the residential staff as a teacher and counselor from 1999-2000, served as Head Counselor in 2001, and worked on the Administrative Team from 2003-2009. An Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at West Virginia University, she is a Whiting Award winner and the author of the poetry collection, In Full Velvet. Read more about Jenny.

Jocelyn Nicole Johnson (Alum, 1988)
Jocelyn Nicole Johnson attended the Workshop in fiction in 1988. Her debut novella and short story collection, My Monticello, was released in October 2021, and Netflix acquired the rights to the title story for a film adaptation. Lisa Ko (Alum, 1993)

Julia Kudravetz (Alum, 1996)

Alan Linic (Alum, 2006)
Alan Linic attended the Workshop as a poetry student in 2006. He is currently a writer for Saturday Night Live and has also written and performed with The Second City in Chicago. He and his wife, Claire, wrote a book together called Our Perfect Marriage.

Mallory Clare Loehr (Alum, 1982)


Mallory Loehr attended the Workshop as a poetry student in 1982. She is a children’s book author and the Senior Vice President of Random House Books for Young Readers.

Andrew Martin (Alum, 2002)
Andrew Martin attended the Workshop as a fiction student in 2002. His debut novel, Early Work, was a New York Times Notable Book of 2018. Read more about Andrew.

Jenny Gillespie Mason (Alum, 1995)
Jenny Gillespie Mason attended the Workshop in songwriting in 1995, then joined the residential staff as a teacher and counselor in 1999, 2001 and 2002. She is the founder of the Native Cat Recordings record label and plays in the band Sis. Read more about Jenny.

Amanda McRaven (Alum, 1991-1992)
Amanda McRaven attended the Workshop as a fiction student in 1991 and a poetry student in 1992. She is a Los Angeles-based graduate of the University of Virginia’s Drama Department, a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, and has directed works in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and Virginia. She regularly directs and creates ensemble theater with her company, Fugitive Kind.

Rahul Mehta (Alum, 1990)
Rahul Mehta attended the Workshop in fiction in 1990. He is the author of a novel, No Other World, and a short story collection, Quarantine. Read more about Rahul.

Jeff Miller (Alum, 1995-1996)
Jeff Miller attended the Workshop in songwriting in 1995 and 1996 and joined the residential staff as a teacher and counselor from 1999-2001. Formerly the editor of Thrillist LA, he is now a freelance writer and founder of LA band Black Crystal Wolf Kids. Read more about Jeff.

Molly Minturn (Alum, 1996)
Molly Minturn attended the Workshop as a fiction student in 1996. A graduate of the University of Virginia and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, she has worked as an editor at the Iowa Review and the Virginia Quarterly Review and as a teacher at the University of Iowa, Knox College, and the Waring School. She is the author of the poetry chapbook Not in Heaven (Southword).
